Editor, Jen, tries out this glute-and-ab-burning class at MAD’s new flagship studio.
If you want to feel utterly humbled, try Lagree. Though certainly not the strongest woman I know, I’m not weak by any means – I can deadlift 80kg, hip thrust 125kg, and have a half marathon under my belt. But this class? It destroyed me – in the best possible way. The Lagree Legs & Booty class at MAD’s new Mayfair studio hit my glutes, hamstrings, abs and obliques with an intensity I was not prepared for.

Let’s just say, if you haven’t even been to a reformer pilates class, this isn’t where you want to start. I’d recommend trying MAD’s beginner-friendly “Lagree Starter” class a couple of times before diving into the deep end. Grip socks are a must (which I learned the hard way, buying mine right before class), and brace yourself for the lactic acid burn. There’s barely any relief, and each movement lasts about a minute with slow and pulsing variations – pure muscle-burn. My favourite was the “Runner’s Lunge” and least favourite was the “Twisted Saw” (be prepared to learn a whole new fitness vernacular, by the way).
What is the Lagree Method?
Lagree is like Pilates’ tougher, more intense distant relative. It’s performed on a Megaformer machine, which looks a little complicated, but is actually quite intuitive once you figure out the springs and straps. The Megaformer is designed for slow, controlled movements that target specific muscle groups, using tension and resistance to intensify every motion. It’s killer on the core, glutes and legs, and can even be utilised for upper body movements, making it the ultimate full-body workout. Trust me, you’ll feel muscles you didn’t know existed.

Our instructor, Sach, was a star. She explained everything, since it was my first time on a Megaformer, and monitored every participants’ form while the class was in full swing. Note: the instructor is always watching, so if you’re hoping to get away with making this class easier by adding fewer springs than they tell you to, don’t even think about it.

MAD Mayfair is tucked away in a tree-lined street not too far from Marble Arch tube station. When you walk in, the reception is all about making you feel welcome, with trendy drinks like Dash and Trip available pre- or post-class. The studio itself is stunning – an open-plan ground floor with a dedicated Barre space, and the Megaformer dungeon (AKA the Lagree studio) downstairs. And did I mention the infrared sauna? Perfect for melting away post-Lagree soreness.

After the class, I was exhausted, but there’s this sense of deep fulfilment that keeps me craving more. I won’t lie—sneezing hurt my obliques the next day, but that’s just the price you pay for chasing gains, right? Lagree may sound intimidating, but once you start, there’s no going back.
